Meet the Graduates 2018 | Reflections

Meet the Grads 2018Meet the Graduates is Lincoln School of Film & Media’s annual alumni event on-campus for students to connect with creatives from the working world. Former students from 2002 to 2017 shared their experiences, tips and advice with current students on the 14th November with a Question Time Graduate Panel and Networking. You’ll see clips from the event from a student crew with New Media Lincs soon. In the meantime, here are some reflections from final year students and graduates:

Jo AshmanJo Ashman, Class of 2002 works in television from X-Factor to Springwatch: The Mentoring programme and Meet the Grads are excellent initiatives. Getting to question people in the industry, actually doing the job you hope to do one day, is such a great opportunity for the students, one I wish I’d had when I was studying.” Continue reading

Holly Miechowski, Class of 2007 | Casting Producer’s Tips into TV

Holly: Casting Producer , TV

Holly: Casting Producer, TV

During my Media Production Degree, I applied for work experience at a Birmingham based Production Company, Maverick Television. When I got the placement, I was extremely grateful for the opportunity, one that I believe I may not have had without the encouragement and support from my lecturers at the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media. It was a great few weeks, and I worked hard, making sure I networked with who ever I possibly could. It was exciting; I was working on the hit Channel 4 Series, ‘10 Years Younger.’  This is where I got to see how a Production worked. My role involved various admin duties in the office, helping with shoot prep (prop buying etc.) and also being able to go out on the shoot and see first hand how it all worked!

Following the work placement, I went back to University to finish my degree, graduating in 2007 with a 2.1. I then moved to Manchester where I knew there were plenty of TV opportunities, and also because, well, I wasn’t quite ready for the big smoke that is London! It was hard to begin with, I sent many, many, emails and letters, applying for Runner work. It was hard, there was a lot of competition, I had no employment history in the industry, only my work experience and my degree. Whilst I was looking, I signed up to a Recruitment agency, I didn’t really want to do anything other than TV work, but I had my rent to pay and I was no longer living on student loans!

Student Opportunity, Uni of Lincoln | KDU Programme in Penang

Super student opportunity overseas for first and second year LSFM Media Production undergraduates. Nigel Morris, Principal Lecturer and KDU Tutor, posted: University of Lincoln (UK) has a close partnership with KDU University College in Penang, Malaysia, which delivers a Media Production degree very similar to ours.  Part of the arrangement is for KDU to offer a three-week summer programme in late June to twelve Lincoln students on the following programmes: Accountancy, Business (including joint Business programmes), Computing, Media Production, and PR.  Selection will be via an application process.

Having visited KDU myself last year (and looking forward to going again for the Exam Board this summer) I can vouch for what a friendly, vibrant, fascinating and beautiful place Penang is, and I would urge you to go online to find out more. If you’re interested, there’s a talk on Wednesday 7 March at 4-5 pm in MB1019 to explain the programme and application process. It would be really appreciated if you would register your interest ahead of the meeting by emailing studyabroad@lincoln.ac.uk Continue reading

Joanne-Newton-Graduation2017Joanne Newton BA (Hons) Media Production, Class of 2017: What a day!  I don’t even know where to begin! Feels a bit of a whirlwind.

Graduating next to everyone I’ve worked so hard with for three years makes me incredibly proud of not only myself but everyone around me. And having the chance to experience this in such an amazing building is something I will never forget! I feel very proud and very lucky right now, and having my degree in my hands feels so surreal.

I’ll reflect more … for now see some photos of my Grad Day. Continue reading

Joanne Newton, LSFM Student | Peru17 Challenge update

Hola from Joanne Newton! LSFM final year Media Production undergraduate with fellow students from the University of Lincoln are doing voluntary work on a media literacy charity project in Peru with Challenges Abroad. Today is their last day said Jo: surrounded by all of the children, their parents and some teachers we watched everyone’s creations. They were so amazed when they saw their little faces on the big screen! We gave out prizes to them and then said goodbye with hugs from all. I won’t lie I even shed a tear! It was incredible and will stay with me forever.

Timely now to reflect with snippets from her blog about the first teaching day: I was feeling a little nervous that morning, not knowing what to expect from the school or the kids. Continue reading
