4-week Festival of Creativity, Lincoln | 12 May – 9 June 2017

FestofCreativity-2017-LOGOLincoln is hosting its first, FREE, Festival of Creativity (FOC), organised by the University of Lincoln’s College of Arts. The four-week fest (12th May-9th June) is to showcase and celebrate the emerging creative talent in the city – bringing together a wide range of disciplines through a series of exhibitions, talks and performances for everyone to ‘engage, explore, imagine’. The festival hosts a number of signature events, with advice from leading creative industry experts exploring the wider debate about the importance of the arts in contemporary society.

Final year students from across the College of Arts will celebrate the culmination of three years of study, sharing their work in respective Degree Shows in venues across the city, from art exhibitions and fashion shows to interactive displays and theatrical performances. Indie-Lincs 2017 | International Film Fest 16th-18th March, LPAC

Indie-Lincs is an International film festival that champions low and micro budget films and their filmmakers. The event’s organiser, lecturer at the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media (LSFM) and award winning filmmaker is Dr Mikey Murray: Our festival programme is brought to Lincoln through the hard work of student co-ordinators, who’re on the Film and TV course at LSFM: Becca Booty, Tom Durrans, Lucy Hansard, Ali Mendzil, Ben Reynolds & Tom Woodcock. Indie-Lincs aim is to help the best independent filmmakers from around the world showcase their original work and network successfully with their audience, other filmmakers and the indie filmmaking community. Screening of over 40 shorts and features at University of Lincoln Performing Arts Centre (LPAC).

Deputy Head of the College of Arts Dr Sarah Barrow: We very much hope that you can make it along to some of the Festival. There will be several filmmakers visiting Lincoln for the event and some wonderful international film content over the two days Friday 17th and Saturday 18th March in LPAC. On Thursday 16th March there’ll be a Special Opening event – with film, guests and live music – in the Stephen Langton Building Cinema, 7pm-9pm. Alison Oxborrow & Patrick Collins, Class of 2015 | Ethel & Ernest

Our 2015 BA (Hons) Animation alumni Alison Oxborrow and Patrick Collins were part of the creative team at Lupus Films on Ethel & Ernest (2016), which is the production company’s first feature film. The hand-drawn animated film is a true love story based on the book about his parents by author and illustrator Raymond Briggs (creator of The Snowman). Last month, the Ethel & Ernest film was premièred at the BFI London Film Festival 2016 and released in UK cinemas this month.

Alison and Patrick met the film’s Animation Director Peter Dodd and Head of Assistant Animation Denise Dean during their degree course at the University of Lincoln.  Patrick said:  I wouldn’t be where I am now if I hadn’t studied animation in Lincoln. As well as learning about form, construction and animation technique I met some great people who actually work in the industry. When I saw that Denise was looking for assistant animators to work on the film, I jumped at the chance. Read the news story by the University of Lincoln press office.

Andy Ellis, Class of 2002 | Lost Village Fest 27th-29th May 2016

Andy-Ellis_2002Graduate Our BA (Hons) Media Production graduate, also MSc International Business, Andy Ellis is the Director at Major Label and he is organising Lost Village Festival in Lincolnshire from 27th to 29th May. The fest is a ‘musical journey like no other‘ said Andy:  More than a music festival, Lost Village is an immersive experience taking place in a long forgotten forest – a surreal world misplaced in the sands of time. As you wonder its leafy corridors you’ll discover places such as the Abandoned Chapel, Burial Ground and Forgotten Cabin. One minute you’re dancing to disco under a canopy of leaves, the next you’re face-to-face with one of the village’s native inhabitants.

International Indie-Lincs Film Festival | Tickets 11 & 12 March

Indie-Lincs-Film-FestivalNews about a NEW international film festival called Indie-Lincs from the Uni’s PR Officer Rob Wildman: Indie-Lincs was established by the University of Lincoln School of Film & Media to showcase the talents of original and creative filmmakers operating on low budgets, including media students from across the UK and overseas. Screenings and awards will take place on the 11th and 12th March 2016.  Indie-Lincs Film Fest Director is LSFM Lecturer in Film Production Dr Mikey Murray:  We have been delighted by the response to our new festival and we are screening over 30 films from all over the world. We genuinely hope that the local community will get behind us and come down to join in.

Frequency Festival 2015 | Trailer & Doco

Frequency Festival of Digital Culture will be on in Lincoln (UK) from 23rd October to 1st November 2015 and you can be a part of it. Organisers said: the biennial festival provides a platform to celebrate the pioneering spirit of digital innovation and culture through exhibition, creative collision and debate. Janice Kearns, LSFM Senior Lecturer | Sheffield Doc/Fest 2015

cf070a5b3a585c473cf526e2ef70cf96LSFM Senior Lecturer Janice Kearns said: This year’s Sheffield International Doc/Fest (5-10 June 2015) was bigger and better than ever with a mixture of film screenings, presentations, discussions, masterclasses, pitching sessions, live performances, exhibitions, installations and interactive media; as well as opportunities to meet funders and commissioners and chat to filmmakers and other people in the industry. There were several LSFM students and graduates working as volunteers at the festival, which is a great way to get involved.

For me highlights were: a live musical performance of the soundtrack to Michael Nyman’s War Work: 8 songs with film with a screening of the film; a really good pitching session for research funding for an environmentally themed TV series; a session on getting your film funded; some really interesting films including India’s Daughter (dir. Leslee Udwin), The Russian Woodpecker (dir. Chad Gracia ) Star Men (dir. Alison Rose)  and The Look of Silence (dir. Joshua Oppenheimer), a companion piece to the acclaimed The Act of Killing and themed strands featuring films by Albert Maysles and John Akomfrah. Continue reading →

Sophie Gillott, Student Volunteer | Sheffield Doc/Fest 2015

LSFM student-mentee and 2015 Graduand Sophie Gillott said: I had the opportunity to volunteer for Sheffield Doc/Fest (5-10June). I was assigned the role of ‘MeetMarket Volunteer’ after a phone call with Volunteer Co-Ordinator Elliott Thompson who had held a lecture in Semester B of this year.  I booked my hotel super early and ended up having a day and a half spare in Sheffield before my first briefing. I decided to have a wander and came across The Peace Gardens, Sheffield Cathedral and amazing coffee shops and cafes – ‘Tamper Coffee’ and ‘Marmadukes’ both of which you’ve got to go to if you’re ever in Sheffield!

Our first briefing was short, and our Managers and Assistants went through the details on how we conduct the MeetMarket and the plan for the next couple of days.  Continue reading →

Magna Carta 800th Anniversary | Original document in Lincoln (UK)

magna-carta-web-215 June 2015 is the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.  There are four original documents of Magna Carta, which were sealed by King John in 1215, and one is in LINCOLN.  ‘The Great Charter’ agreed the rule of law applied to all and recognised civil liberties. Visit Lincoln said the city is ‘the only place in the world where you can find an original copy of Magna Carta together with the Charter of the Forest … The two charters belong to Lincoln Cathedral and are housed in Lincoln Castle.’  A new visitor centre at the castle, events and public lectures will celebrate Lincoln Cathedral’s Magna Carta. magna-carta-vault-LincolnCastleAs part of the Great Magna Carta Weekend, on 13 June the University of Lincoln and Lincoln BIG hosted the Freedom Festival.  Then on Sunday (14 June) at Lincoln Castle was the launch of a digital platform 1215.Today exploring the global significance of the Magna Carta through Art.  It is a 2-year collaborative initiative led by the University of Lincoln with regional art organisations, schools, businesses, City and County councils. co_LAB @ Web We Want Festival | Southbank Centre 29–31 May

web-we-want_logoFrom Deputy Head of LSFM Richard Vickers: Students and academics from the University of Lincoln will be taking part in the Web We Want Festival at the Southbank Centre, 29–31 May, as part of the School of Film & Media co_LAB research group. The Web We Want festival is investigating the past 25 years of the Web and its possible future. The festival is inspired by the work of Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web and produced in partnership with Sir Tim’s World Wide Web Foundation.

co_LAB_brain-dump_May2015The co_LAB team is running an intensive interdisciplinary workshop (21-28 May) in Lincoln, designed to bring together students from across all the three colleges within the University. The call for participants was aimed at Level 2 students and resulted in students from the School of Film and Media (College of Arts), School of Computer Science (College of Science) and School of Psychology (College of Social Science) collaborating together on a core brief.  Continue reading →
