Chris Bingham, Class of 2011 | Vlogger on Uni lectures at NCH

ChristopherBingham_NCHvideoOur 2011 graduate Christopher Bingham, known as Bing, is a YouTube vlogger and comedian who was commissioned by New College of the Humanities (NCH) to produce an alternative view about University lectures. He said: As anyone who’s been working with YouTube for a while knows, operating on the channel prolifically involves getting a lot of offers from brands, but in this case I was able to really get behind the product.  I’m very passionate about learning, not just through higher education, but throughout every stage of life. I had a lot of fun working with NCH on producing a script that I know my audience will enjoy, but also that will help them to think about the merits of higher education.

Alex O’Brien, Class of 2014 | Audio Production Freelancer

Alex-O'Brien_APClass-of-2014My name is Alex and I am going to be graduating in Audio Production in September 2014. Since finishing university in May I’ve found out I will be graduating with First Class Honours. I never thought I was capable of achieving this. It has given me so much confidence in my abilities and I cannot thank the amazing LSM staff enough.

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to have a job interview at Shepperton Studios for the position of trainee sound assistant and it was an amazing experience. I met some incredible people who had done the sound on some of my favourite films and saw industry standard studios in action. The whole experience has kept me inspired and has given me more drive to carry on working towards my goal to work in the creative industry.

I’ve also managed to get a job in my hometown. Continue reading

BBC’s 1st OB recreated by LSM, Locals, a Violinist & Nightingale!

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of BBC radio, LSM Senior Lecturer in audio production David McSherry shares this sound story.

DylanRoys-and-JanetWelsh_18may2014-at-18.34.1490 years ago today on the 19th May, the BBC transmitted its very first outside broadcast and the stars of the show were cellist Beatrice Harrison accompanied by a very tuneful nightingale. To celebrate the anniversary, Senior Lecturer in radio and sound Dylan Roys and I accepted the challenge from Reverend Mark Holden (Wragby parishes) to recreate the historic event in Lincolnshire.

Violinist Janet Welsh kindly agreed to join us in this quest and we headed off to Whisby Nature Reserve to recruit a willing nightingale to our band. As dusk fell, Graham, our expert guide and one of Whisby’s wardens, attuned our ears to the song of the nightingale amongst the many other voices of blackcap, whitethroat and robin.  LISTEN to ‘The Violin and The Nightingale’ hereContinue reading
