I graduated in BA (Hons) Media Production in 2013. I currently work for Mission Room Ltd as a specialist in 360 film production and delivery. I have produced films for Network Rail, Transport for London, a number of Universities across the country and recently created the new visitor experience in Cheddar Gorge, ‘Beyond the View‘.
When you’re finishing university you often get asked “Where do you want to be in 5 years?” and let’s be honest, it’s a very difficult question. But 5 years on I’m here to say how it stacks up to what I was thinking when I graduated from the Uni of Lincoln in 2012.
When I left I wanted to be able to set up my own photography business and be working for myself. It was a risky and in some ways optimistic thing as I was unsure how I was going to achieve this as I had limited resources in terms of money and equipment (I had a camera I’d used my student loan and money from some work experience jobs to buy) but had to keep paying rent and other expenses while building the business.
I was given a great head start by getting work with The Lincolnite which gave me a steady income and also the time to grow my business as I work for them on an on call basis and I still work with them today. Continue reading
Hello I’m Steve Smailes. I am a freelance photographer specialising in editorial, commercial, events and wedding photography. After graduating from the Media Production course in 2012 I stayed put in Lincoln and never left! The work was here and the base of contacts I’d built up while at university was paying dividends, so why leave? Now over 4 years on, my partner and I have bought a house with our dog Benny. I work under my own name for clients big and small, mostly in Lincolnshire. Most notably The Lincolnite and its sister publications Lincolnshire Business and Lincolnshire Reporter which is a large chunk of the work I do with my images seen by over 500,000 readers a month! I’ve also worked with the Lincolnshire Showground, Macmillan Cancer Support, Visit Lincoln, LIVES, Relentless Energy Drink and even the University of Lincoln itself.
I also find time to help out students in my own time. I’m part of the university’s mentoring scheme that links students with industry (at LSFM many mentors are working graduates) to offer advice on life after uni course work and business advice. LSFM Mentoring is a really rewarding scheme for both parties and my mentee Emily has got to come on a few jobs with me, which I hope was a real boost for her work experience. I often go for coffee chats with her, and also students from Lincoln College too and have given talks to level 3 students and local camera clubs. Continue reading
Christian Moles is our 2010 animation graduate and runs his own company called The Inside Mole. It has been working on a new film and Christian is the director of the Invicta movie. The war drama was inspired by Christian’s grandfather who served in the British Expeditionary Force. The feature, which started over three years’ ago with historical research, was made with a team of undergraduates from the University of Lincoln. You can read Christian’s making of this film at the Lincolnite. The online release date will be the 29th May 2015 – timely for the 75th anniversary of Dunkirk. For now you can see the trailer for Invicta (2015).
Our 2012 alumnus Steve Smailes is a freelance professional photographer, who works at the Lincolnite, and in 2014 won Relentless Here To Be Heard (competition for gig photos). As the winner, his photographic work will be exhibited in London THIS week. Steve said: Here are some of the images that will be in the Relentless Exhibition. It runs from 28th April to the 5th May at the Relentless Store at No.5 Denmark Street, London and features works from various events over the last two or three years. A majority of these images were taken in or around Lincoln.
