Hannah Wilson, Class of 2012 | Designer at Grazia Magazine

HannahWilson_2003GradI can’t quite believe that I moved to Lincoln to start my degree just over 6 years ago now, and that I’ve had a full time job in London for over three!  I studied Contemporary Lens Media, now BA (Hons) Photography, at Lincoln, and can honestly say I wouldn’t have the job I do today without my degree from the university; not only because of the skills that I learnt whilst studying, or even just having the title on my CV, but the fact that it gave me three years of uninterrupted time to build a solid portfolio that I could proudly take to interview with prospective employers. Our lecturers used to tell us to treasure the time, because rarely would we ever have as much time to invest in making work again. How right they were!

I currently work at Grazia magazine in London. My role is on the the art desk, designing pages for the magazine and editing images to choose the best ones to send to print each week. Continue reading

Emily McSorley, 2015 Graduand | Intern now a Job, North One TV

EmilyMcSorely_2015GradI was fortunate enough to receive a four week work placement with North One Television on June the 1st. After just finishing my final year jumping into this four week internship was amazing! From my first year I always knew I wanted to work in television so I worked incredibly hard to receive work experience including one week as an Office Runner at Objective Productions, freelance work as a Junior Researcher and working on a Lincolnshire feature film as a Production Assistant. It was these snippets of work experience and an obvious determination to work in factual entertainment that I believe secured me this position and I would urge all students to take on whatever experience you can as it will benefit you massively when applying for entry level positions. Katie Martin, Class of 2012

Katie MartinHi! I’m Katie, a Media Production graduate. I’m currently working as a Web and Multimedia Intern for the University’s Marketing department…which is definitely not the route I imagined my career taking! Throughout my degree I only ever wanted to go into film, but after finishing my course in May 2012 I was faced with unemployment (or staying in my part-time retail job) along with many other graduates.

I applied for various roles and internships across the country and found my current internship on the University’s job siteIt wasn’t exactly the field I wanted to go into, but it did sound interesting and challenging. Continue reading

Internship Bill Fails

Hazel Blears’ Internship Bill failed to be get a second reading in parliament last week.  Sabina Usher writes in the Independent “It was (an) important step in the campaign to stop unpaid internships and demonstrate that asking young people to work for free is unacceptable, and not to mention potentially illegal under national minimum wage law. While it wouldn’t have totally eradicated the practice, the Bill would have reduced these internships’ number and visibility and begun the process of necessary cultural change.”

Is this good or bad news for media production graduates? What do you think? Continue reading

Boom in media opportunities

From the University Careers and Employability unit:

We have recently seen a dramatic boost in Media opportunities, so much so we have been struggling to keep track. This increase has not only come from big recruiters such as the BBC, who are set to host various careers focused events in different locations throughout the year, but there has also been a steady increase in adverts from local small medium enterprises alongside more unexpected companies like Branston Potatoes and the NHS.
