Melanie Watson, class of 2009

I graduated from the University of Lincoln in September 2009 after studying a 3 year BA (Hons) Media Production degree. I absolutely loved my time up there and wouldn’t change it for the world.

The people, the course, the work, the night life, the location (and even the Brayford ducks!) all made my time at university completely worthwhile.

Since leaving Lincoln, I have moved back home to Peterborough. At first I found it really difficult to get a job; there just didn’t seem to be anything out there. So I decided to get some work experience at a local newspaper. Here I began writing articles from press releases and interviewing people for local stories. Although I enjoyed my time here, I knew I wasn’t cut out for journalism, so left when I found a paid job at Booking.com as a temp.

Although the work was boring (looking at an excel spreadsheet for 9 hours a day!) it was a paid job and that was all that mattered to me at the time. This job started to help fill in my CV, giving me bits of experience in web marketing here and there. My temp work here ran out after 6 months and I was left, yet again, unemployed.

Luckily within two weeks, I found my job where I am today. Thanks to my degree, experience and willingness to learn, I am now an Online Marketing Executive at a company based in Peterborough called mouse2house. This is an online computer superstore, selling remanufactured toner cartridges, inkjets, memory cards and other office supplies. I don’t know where to start with the work I do here – it’s so varied. From writing stories on our blog  to helping manage our team of designers and developers. I send out weekly newsletters, analyse traffic and sales statistics, brief projects and have even started managing our Google Adwords campaigns. I never thought I would have this much responsibility so soon after leaving university, but it just shows you what can happen.
